The mighty Mersey as she was once called, used to be one of the premium
salmon rivers in Nova Scotia, until the Mersey paper mill decided they needed
power to run their paper mill. This was a long time ago and since that time
the Mersey has changed. It is now sections of river with the biggest being
Lower Great brook flowage.
The sections are connected by fish ways up to the townsite. There are some
big smallmouth in this system as well as some monster browns, and even with
the competition, there are still a decent population of brookies. There
was a big drawdown a couple years ago to fix the dams and fishways which
has led to better fish movement
